This years design studies project named ‘side by side’ for the academic year 2010/11 is drawing to an end, and like us here at Aware4Aphasia, the current 2nd years have been working very hard and have made their own website which has some interesting videos and useful information.

Here we are, at the end of the project and the following posters are the final ones. The ones in which we thought would be good enough to make Aphasia aware in the general public, helping the lives of those who have it. As you can see, they are not serious posters like other medical awareness posters, they take on a humourous approach which should be enjoyed by all, whilst still conveying the message effectively.

Speakability Event

On Thursday 19^th November selected students from each group in our Design Studies class attended an Aphasia event day ran by Edinburgh Speakability. The aim of the day was to meet with the self-help groups from around Scotland and gave us the opportunity to listen to guest speakers, including medical specialists and organisations who had worked closely with the Speakability. The day started well with the invited groups sharing where and what they had been up to from the previous months. It was very intriguing to hear what the group had been up to, and came apparent that they really enjoyed dining out. We were given the opportunity at lunch to speak to the group members, asking them how they deal with having Aphasia. Their responses were very useful and will help us in writing out report.

One of the main reflections from all of us that attended was that Aphasia doesn’t have to hold you back, the group members were very active and weren’t at all negative. They all had interesting stories to tell us and I think we all got a lot out of our day.

Thank you to Speakability and its members for allowing us to attend the day.
